Council funding boost for local community groups

Over £200,000 funding for local community groups

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council has approved funding to support community projects.

Councillors agreed to recommence the programme which previously supported a significant number of projects across Antrim and Newtownabbey.

Many activities funded by the initiative were on hold due to COVID19 but the relaxation of the restrictions imposed by the NI Executive, allows groups to recommence activities from September 2020 with adaptions, online alternatives, social distancing and COVID-19 risk assessments in place.

The Council is contributing £171,380 with £66,750 being provided by the Department for Communities, bringing the total support available to £238,130.

The types of activities supported include counselling, family support programmes, mental health awareness, youth mentoring, learning support and extended school support targeting underachievement.

The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Cllr Jim Montgomery said,

“This is an important initiative, as it delivers support to those communities experiencing significant challenges and levels of deprivation. COVID19 was a major disruptor to Council activity, but as we build back our services this is a great example of reengaging in the excellent work we do with our local communities. I have seen first-hand the difference these projects make and I’m very pleased we are able to support them once again.”
