Council recognised for reducing environmental impact

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council has successfully retained a leading industry award for its Environmental Management System.

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council has successfully retained a leading industry award for its Environmental Management System.

This management system, which Council operates across all its facilities and operations, establishes a structure to reduce the impact on the environment and seeks continuous improvement on the environmental performance of Council services. The system is externally audited each year under the ISO14001 international standard for Environmental Management and assists Council in meeting any climate change objective.

Although several Councils across Northern Ireland have the accreditation for their waste and recycling services, Antrim and Newtownabbey is one of a very small number of authorities that retain it right across the organisation.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Jim Montgomery said;

“It’s fantastic that Council has once again been recognised for its environmental performance, particularly during the challenges that have been faced this year. I would like to congratulate the staff who remain committed to reducing their impact on the environment through their range of actions including reducing single use plastics, introducing systems to reduce paper and the appropriate use of recycling systems.”

“We all need to do our bit for the environment and I am extremely proud that we as a Council strive for continued improvement with regard to our environmental performance can be an environmental leader for the Borough.”
