With costs of £15.5m for Northern Ireland Hospice and Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice to deliver its services each year, they rely heavily on public support and the majority of this money is raised through corporate funding, shops and other fundraising activities.
Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Alderman John Smyth said “It is great to show support of this crucial charity during Children’s Hospice Week by lighting up our civic buildings purple. Charities have suffered greatly during Covid-19 with fundraising events being cancelled, they need the support of the public now more than ever to continue to run this vital care service”
A 12-year-old school girl from Carrickfergus, Co Antrim, Madison Wright, has been appointed as the first Youth Ambassador for Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice as part of Children’s Hospice Week. Madison has raised more than £15,000 for Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice since she began fundraising in 2018; organising Coffee Mornings, head-shaves, and non-uniform days in school, among various other activities.
Grace Stewart, Head of Children’s Hospice said: “We thought this would be a lovely way to begin Children’s Hospice Week. Madison is an inspiration to us all at Hospice; she became part of our family through her friendship with Gracie and Noah Coates. Gracie and Noah have stayed with us at Horizon House over the years, however Noah, sadly died last summer of a rare neurological condition.”
