For Our Freedom and Yours Exhibition at Ballyclare Town Hall

The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Jim Montgomery welcomed Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Northern Ireland Pawel Majewski and Maciek Bator to Ballyclare Town Hall for the opening of ‘For Our Freedom and Yours’ exhibition.

As part of the Councils VJ Day 75 commemorative programme, ‘For Our Freedom and Yours’ exhibition is the story of the 1st Polish Armoured Division, a fascinating and moving display which traces the story of this famous army from their formation in Duns in 1942 to their campaigns in Western Europe in 1944 - 1945 under the command of the esteemed General Stanislaw Maczek.

The Mayor, Councillor Montgomery said; “I am delighted to welcome Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Northern Ireland Pawel Majewski to this exhibition honouring the 1st Polish Armoured Division.  Our Borough is home to a large Polish community today but the relationship between Northern Ireland and Poland stems way back to the 1940s when two Polish squadrons, 303 and 315 who were attached to the Royal Air Force, spent time in Northern Ireland in the fight against the enemy. Some of these brave servicemen are buried in Carnmoney cemetery”.

Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Northern Ireland, Pawel Majewski added; “It is a privilege to be invited to this exhibition at Ballyclare Town Hall, remembering the 1st Polish Armoured Division. It is important to recognise the connection between Northern Ireland and Poland dates back to the Second World War, when around 100 Polish servicemen were based in Northern Ireland. The relationship between Poland and Northern Ireland is as strong today with over 30,000 Poles living in Northern Ireland. I would encourage the Polish community to come and see this exhibition whilst adhering to social distance guidelines.”

Following a successful run at The Old Courthouse Antrim, ‘For Our Freedom and Yours’ exhibition produced by Titanic Honour and Glory (Scotland) is open at Ballyclare Town Hall from Tuesday to Saturday 12noon to 6pm with admission free until Saturday 12 September.
