Don’t Get Burnt By Burglary This Summer

Summer is a time when many people go on holidays and spend more time outdoors, making their homes more vulnerable to burglary. Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is urging residents to secure their properties and personal belongings before going on holiday or enjoying a sunny day trip away.

Here are some simple precautions you should consider before going away this summer:

  • Secure your doors and windows: Ensure all doors and windows are locked properly before leaving your home
  • Don’t advertise your absence: Avoid posting about your holiday plans or prolonged absence on social media platforms
  • Inform trusted neighbours: Let your trustworthy neighbours know about your absence and ask them to keep an eye on your property
  • Arrange for post and package collection: Contact the post office and ask them to hold your mail or ask a neighbour to collect it
  • Maintain the appearance of an occupied home: Use timers for lights and electronics to deter burglars on the lookout for an empty house
  • Secure valuables: Store your valuable belongings in a safe, hidden location that is difficult for burglars to find
  • Be cautious with spare keys: Avoid hiding spare keys outside your home.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Mark Cooper said, “We would like to emphasise the importance of securing your home during the summer months to protect your property, belongings and most importantly, your loved ones. By taking proactive measures, residents can significantly reduce the risk of burglaries and ensure a safe and relaxing summer season.”

In June, the Police Service of Northern Ireland launched its ‘Safer Summer Together’ campaign, encouraging members of the public to have an enjoyable summer whilst remaining mindful of safety issues to look out for. For further guidance go to www.psni.police.uk/summer
