Seachtain Na Gaeilge – Irish Language Week 2023

Seachtain Na Gaeilge le Energia is an international Irish language festival and one of the biggest celebrations of Irish language and culture. It takes place each year in Ireland and in many other countries, from 1-17 March and is often referred to as Irish Language Week.

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council will host a number of Irish Language Workshops and storytelling events across the Borough offering an opportunity to engage with and explore the Irish Language. Whether you are hoping to refresh your skills or are a complete beginner you can come along and have a go. Workshops are delivered in partnership with local Irish Language providers.

Irish Language Week workshops;


TURAS

‘Turas’ meaning journey or pilgrimage in both Irish Gaeilge and Scots Gàidhlig is an Irish language group which aims to connect people from Protestant communities to their own history with the Irish language. Turas is based on the belief that the language belongs to everyone and that it can be a mechanism of reconciliation.

‘Whose Language?’ workshops, delivered by Linda Irvine on the history of the Irish Language

  • 9 March 2023, 7 - 9pm - Stiles Community Centre, Antrim
  • 16 March 2023, 7 - 9pm - Lilian Bland Pavilion, Glengormley.

‘Few words’ families’ workshop aimed at total beginners and suitable for families.  Participants will learn a few words in Irish alongside a song or nursery rhyme

  • 15 March 2023, 2.30 - 3.30pm - Mossley Pavilion, Newtownabbey
  • 20 March 2023, 2.30 - 3.30pm - Clotworthy House, Antrim.

Croi Eanna

‘Croi Eanna’ is an Irish Medium group based within Glengormley.

Irish Language workshops / storytelling

  • 11 March 2023, 10am - 2pm, venue to be confirmed
  • 25 March 2023, 10am – 1.30pm, Lilian Bland Pavilion, Glengormley. 

Parkrun and Breakfast

  • 11 March 2023, 9.30am, Parkrun at V36 at 9.30am followed breakfast at Gaelscoil Eanna, Hightown Road, Newtownabbey.

Irish Sign Language

Irish Sign Language (ISL) Workshops in Toome and Crumlin, delivered as part of Sign Language Week, 13 - 19 March. Spaces are limited and children must be accompanied by an adult.

  • 15 March 2023, 12pm – 2pm, Toome House, Toome
  • 16 March 2023, 10am – 12pm, Crumlin Leisure Centre, Crumlin.
