£10m Ulster University Investment to Create Sports Village

A £10m investment by Ulster University will create a world-class ‘sports village’ in Jordanstown through the expansion of an existing sports centre.

The work, which was approved by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council’s Planning Committee on Monday evening, will add an extra two storeys to the university’s current sport centre building. It will bring a gym, fitness suites and physio room as well as student sports clubhouse with bar to the campus.

A teaching/event space, extended reception area, internal café space, changing rooms and equipment stores are also included in plans approved by the Council within a short turnaround time of just 18 weeks.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Councillor Mark Cooper BEM said the investment would benefit a wide range of users.

I’m pleased to see this investment by Ulster University which will further enhance the existing facilities creating a world-class centre for sporting excellence at Jordanstown.

There’s no doubt sport and fitness can change lives, that’s why I’m extremely proud to have facilities of this calibre in the Borough. This investment will create more training and development options for the thousands of athletes, professional clubs, local sporting groups and more who will use the new sports village.

Chair of the Planning Committee Councillor Robert Foster added his congratulations to those involved in making the expansion happen.

The new Ulster University Sports Centre at Jordanstown adds another remarkable asset to the range of public, club and educational sport resources in our Borough. Congratulations to everyone involved in the project.
