Fuelling Futures: Igniting Young Minds on the Road to Success in the Transport and Logistics Sector

Over 400 students took part in a recent Transport and Logistics Event, funded by Department for Communities and hosted by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council.  The school children from 16 local primary and post-primary schools had the opportunity to explore the sector’s diverse range of careers, current employment opportunities and the various pathways leading to employment within the sector.

The students actively participated in a range of engaging and interactive activities, carefully crafted to provide them with a hands-on understanding of the Transport and Logistics industry.  Industry experts were present to share their insights and expertise, providing students with a practical, enjoyable, and realistic overview of the sector.

This successful event marks a continuation of the achievements from the previous year, as the Antrim and Newtownabbey Labour Market Partnership, in collaboration with the Council and Young Enterprise, spearheaded yet another impactful initiative this year.

The Labour Market Partnership expressed their delight at the generous sponsorship and participation of several local businesses including Diamond Trucks, Montgomery Transport, Woodside Logistic Group, Henderson Group and Transport Training Services, all of which provided vehicles, staff and speakers.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Mark Cooper opened the event, highlighting the challenges faced by the transport and logistics sector, and by local residents.

“This event has been organised following consultation undertaken by the Partnership which highlighted that, although the transport and logistics sector is our 4th largest employer within Antrim and Newtownabbey, making up 10% of those employed within the local area, there is a lack of awareness of the sector and the wide variety of careers which are available.”

The Mayor continued

“As Mayor, I am acutely aware of the challenges facing our local businesses and residents surrounding employability and the skills needed to access employment, so I am delighted to see so many students here today to learn about this important local industry and the very many potential careers available.”
