Join Antrim and Newtownabbey's BIG Spring Clean to Make a Difference in Your Community!

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is rallying residents to join forces in combating litter as part of the BIG Spring Clean campaign, spearheaded by ‘Live Here Love Here’, and proudly sponsored by DAERA.

Set to be Northern Ireland's largest volunteer clean-up effort, the initiative calls upon communities to roll up their sleeves and take action in tidying up their local areas throughout March and April 2024.

There are two BIG Spring clean-up events taking place within the Borough:

  • Friday 22 March, 10am-12 noon, Glas Na Braden Glen, Newtownabbey

Meeting Point: Whitehouse Working Men’s Club, Carpark at 9:45am

  • Saturday 20 April, 10am-12 noon, Rea’s Wood, Antrim

Meeting Point: Protector of the Lough statue at 9:45am

Each event is anticipated to last approximately two hours, with all necessary equipment provided. The Live Here Love Here team extends a warm invitation to all residents, whether you are part of an existing litter-picking group or simply want to help clear litter from your favourite walking routes.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Mark Cooper urges participation, stating,

“'Taking part in clean-ups isn't just about tidying our shared spaces; it's a chance to connect with other residents, enjoy the outdoors, and make a positive impact on our community. Let's come together, roll up our sleeves, and show our love for Antrim and Newtownabbey by keeping it clean and beautiful. Your participation truly makes a difference!”

Additionally, schools and community/voluntary groups are encouraged to organise their own litter-picks.  The Council offers support through its Support in Kind programme, providing litter-picking equipment and facilitating rubbish collection. Lynda Surgenor, Live Here Love Here Manager said,

“The BIG Spring Clean is one of Live Here Love Here’s biggest campaigns. It is a fantastic opportunity to highlight volunteer action and tackle the issue of litter on our streets, parks, and beaches. In an ideal world, the campaign wouldn’t need to exist year after year, but through the collective force of local volunteers and an emphasis on behaviour change, we can make a huge difference.”
