Council Launches EmpowerHER Initiative to Improve Women’s Health in Antrim and Newtownabbey

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council in collaboration with the Northern Healthy Lifestyles Partnership is excited to introduce EmpowerHER, a participatory budgeting initiative that allows residents to decide how public funds are allocated to projects that will positively impact women’s health across the Borough.

Through EmpowerHER, local constituted groups can apply for funding of up to £400 to create impactful projects which address key areas of women’s health, such as maternity, parenting, menopause, physical and mental well-being, and domestic abuse.

Applications for EmpowerHER funding are now open and will close on 24 November 2024. Groups are asked to submit an application form and create a short video outlining the details of their proposal. All eligible videos will be hosted on the Council’s website, allowing the local community to view and vote for the projects they wish to see delivered.

From 2 December 2024 to 5 January 2025, residents will have the opportunity to cast their votes for the project that resonates most with them. A total of ten projects will be funded, with the top-voted project in each of the seven District Electoral Areas receiving up to £400. Additionally, three runners-up across the Borough will also receive funding.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Neil Kelly said, “EmpowerHER gives residents a unique opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of women in our Borough by voting for projects that align with their needs. This initiative highlights our commitment to community-driven change and we look forward to celebrating the creativity and impact of the winning projects.”

Chair of the Women’s Sub Committee, Councillor Roisin Lynch added, “I am thrilled to see the launch of the EmpowerHER initiative in Antrim and Newtownabbey. This innovative program is a powerful step forward in addressing the diverse health needs of women in our community, empowering local groups to create meaningful change. By giving residents a voice in deciding how resources are allocated, EmpowerHER not only invests in women’s wellbeing but also fosters collaboration and inclusivity. I encourage all eligible groups to apply and for residents to participate by voting—together, we can build a stronger, healthier future for women across the Borough.”
