Frequently Asked Questions

  • What day is my bin due to be collected?

You can check what day your bin is due to be collected by using our bin checker

  • Where should I leave my bin?

Your bin should be left at the edge of your property or at the designated collection point, with the handle turned out.

  • What time will my bin be emptied?

Your bin collection can take place at any time from 7am onwards. As collection times can vary, it is important that always leave your bin out for 7am to ensure that it is emptied. We do not have sufficient resources to go back for a bin which was not out on time.

  • Will extra bags be lifted?

Due to health and safety concerns, only waste which is within the main body of the black, brown and blue bins can be collected. Therefore additional bags cannot be accepted.

  • Can I put my bin out with the lid raised?

Due to health and safety concerns, if your bin lid is raised it will not be emptied. You will be asked to ensure that the lid is fully closed when your bin is presented on your next collection day. We do not have sufficient resources to go back for a bin which was rejected due to a raised lid.

  • What type of waste should I put in the bin?

Please see our what can be recycled page.

  • What should I do with batteries, gas canisters or vapes?

Never put batteries, gas canisters or vapes in your bins or wheelie boxes.  Please return these items to your retailer or dispose of them safely at a Household Recycling Centre.

  • What happens if I present the wrong size of bin or two bins?

If a larger bin or multiple bins are presented without prior approval from Council they will not be emptied.

  • What happens if my bin appears to have been missed?

We will make every effort to empty your bin on its scheduled collection day. However, collections may occasionally be missed due to circumstances such as parked vehicles, roadworks restricting access, difficult road conditions, or severe weather.

Where the missed collection is not the resident’s fault and resources allow, we will aim to return to collect the bin. Please report your missed collection to the Waste Management team on 028 9034 0056 after 9am on the next working day and within 24 hours of the missed collection.  In these cases, please continue to leave your bin out for collection.

Please note that the Council reserves the right not to return for bins that were: presented later than 7am, presented with a raised lid or overfilled or were rejected because they were unauthorised larger bins.

  • What happens to the waste I put in my black bin?

All waste from domestic black bins goes to landfill. Please help us reduce this waste pollution by ensuring that you recycle as much as possible.

  • What To Do If Your Wheelie Box Is Full

If either of your wheelie stack boxes are full you can use overflow bags. Only put one type of material in each bag and never put glass in overflow bags – we cannot accept this for safety reasons. You can save space in your boxes by flattening your cans, cartons, plastics and cardboard. If you would to purchase an additional wheelie stacker, please contact us by emailing waste@antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk or by telephone on 028 9034 0056.

  • What happens when I move house?

Your bins are you own property and should be taken with you when you move house. If you are moving into a new property within the Borough, new bins can be purchased directly from the Council. To make a request, please contact the waste management team by emailing waste@antrimandnewtownabbey.gov.uk or by telephone on 028 9034 0056 during normal working hours.
