Minor Adaption Requests

Antrim & Newtownabbey Borough Council are working in partnership with the Northern Health and Social Care Trust (NHSCT) Occupational Therapy Service to process Minor Adaptation requests as part of the Home Safety Checks that we offer to Over 65s and Vulnerable adults.

Enhanced Home Safety: Streamlined Support

When carrying out a free Home Safety Check, the Council’s Home Safety Team carry out a consultation with the resident to identify risks to help provide tailored safety advice and free equipment. As part of this check it may become apparent that mobility is an issue (e.g. difficulty IN safely and confidently negotiating stairs or steps at the front or back door). As this need has been established (and if the resident lives in a privately owned or rented home) the Home Safety Team are able to request the fitting of either a Handrail or Grabrail for front or back door, a second handrail for the stairs or Grabrail beside the WC. This request goes straight to the NHSCT for fitting without the need for an Occupational Therapy assessment, saving the resident time waiting for that and helping to reduce the waiting list for the Community Occupational Therapy Teams.

We can do this as our Home Safety Team have been trained by the Occupational Therapists for this specific task. We will still refer residents who have more complex needs or those that cannot be met within the scope of this arrangement to the Community Occupational Therapy Team for a home assessment.
