Mayor's Charities

Mayor, Alderman John Smyth nominates his charities

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Alderman John Smyth welcomed his two chosen charities to Antrim Civic Centre to discuss future fundraising events for the year ahead.

Alderman Smyth commented

I am delighted to welcome my chosen charities; Alzheimer’s Society and Cancer Fund for Children to Antrim Civic Centre today. These charities play a vital role in our community and I am looking forward to working with them during my Mayoral term. There are many events and initiatives organised by Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council throughout the year and I hope that together, we will be able to raise some vital funds for these worthwhile causes.”

Alzheimer’s Society is the leading dementia charity working in Northern Ireland, providing services and support to people with dementia today; campaigning for improved support and services; and researching to find the cause, cure and best care for the future. They provide a wide range of support services ensuring nobody should have to face dementia alone and have a vision for a radically improved world for people with dementia.

Cancer Fund for Children provides practical and emotional support, as well as free therapeutic short breaks to children and young people (age 0-24) diagnosed with cancer or living with a parent with cancer. The team of Cancer Support Specialists provide individual and group support in the family home, in the community, on the hospital ward and at the residential facility, Daisy Lodge, in Newcastle Co. Down. They help connect, strengthen and empower young people and their families so that they are better equipped to deal with the emotional impact of cancer.

Throughout his year in officer, the Mayor also hopes to support a number of community and voluntary organisation throughout the Borough.
