Now in its second year, not even the mixed bag of weather could dampen the spirits of those attending.
The Gardens where transformed with amazing exhibitions including ‘Fairy-tale Yarn Bombing’ by local group Reaching Out, which included Jack in the Beanstalk, The Three Little Pigs and The Old Woman who Lived in a Shoe. The Estate - a 2D yarn representation of the Borough of Antrim and Newtownabbey, created by a group of local ladies, Hookery Craft Group was once again on display, attracting great interest.
Returning to this year’s event Chef, broadcaster and author Paula McIntyre MBE rustled up some culinary delights in her ‘Field to Fork’ theme and fashion designer and BBC’s The Great Sewing Bee contestant Angeline Murphy was giving advice on sustainable sewing and reuse of textiles. Londonderry based Doll maker, author and broadcaster Louise Kelly had a captive audience as she shared advice and tips on the world of doll making.
Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Alderman John Smyth commented “It is great to be back at Spinning Yarns Festival. This colourful event of colour and creativity has something for the whole family to enjoy. The passion and hard work from the crafters taking part is reflected in the stunning exhibitions on display”.
A vast array of market stalls ranging from crazy felts to luxurious gifts was great for the shoppers whilst others kicked back and enjoyed the refreshments and live entertainment.
The Mindful Crafting by Joanne was a big hit with the crowds, with drop in sessions highlighting the benefits of knitting and crocheting to our health and wellbeing. Joanne has been knitting and crocheting for over 50 years and has over 35 years’ public and mental health experience working for the health service.
The Guild of Spinners Weavers and Dyers, Herds of endearing Alpacas and a Mobile Farm were also amongst the colourful pattern of events held during this two day festival.
