Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council is to mark the service of Alderman Dr Fraser Agnew MBE who celebrates 40 years in local politics.

At the recent meeting of Council, a Motion was agreed that

“In recognition of the historic milestone of 40 years of service to Council by Alderman Dr Fraser Agnew MBE, this Council express its gratitude and congratulations and undertakes to mark the occasion in an appropriate way”.

A member of the Ulster Unionist Party, Alderman Agnew was first elected to former Newtownabbey Borough Council in 1980, where he served as Mayor in 1990-1991 and a second term in 2013-2014. He also served as Deputy Mayor in both 1989-1990 and 2012-2013.

Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Jim Montgomery, said;

“I am proud to propose this Motion. Fraser has faithfully served this Borough for four decades and that length of service is testament to the faith and trust placed in him by the public, and the respect for him across the Council Chamber.

“A keen historian, he has contributed much to the life of the Council and has been the driving force behind many projects over the years. The fact that he was awarded the Freedom of the Borough in 2007 and a Member of the British Empire in 2015 is testament to his dedication to the Borough.”
