Hosted by the Valley Leisure Centre, the event saw teams from Antrim Forum, Crumlin Leisure Centre, Sixmile Leisure Centre, Ballyearl Arts and Leisure Centre, and the Valley Leisure Centre take part in bowls, boccia, badminton, pickleball and table tennis. The sports were selected as each activity is also available at each Live Long group based in a Borough leisure centre.
The Live Long programme aims to bring people together in a fun and enjoyable setting to boost mental, physical and social fitness through the power of sport. The project is delivered in partnership with the Sport Changes Life foundation.
Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Councillor Mark Cooper BEM said the tournament represents a great example of how staying active can bring positive benefits at age:
“This event proves that sport can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of age or ability. I am delighted that this competition is now in its third year and continues to go from strength to strength.
“It was great that teams from five of the Borough’s Leisure Centres were able to come together to enjoy a bit of healthy competition and then relax and socialise over a cup of tea or coffee. Congratulations to the winners and everyone who participated.”
A volunteer from Sport Changes Life added that the colder weather makes the project more important than ever for many people:
“Coming into the winter season, it is important that older members of society are aware of how to look after themselves.
“Through exercises and physical activity delivered via the Live Long programme, they can help protect themselves by building muscle strength. We also know how physical activity can improve a person’s mental health and Live Long also tackles loneliness as participants always enjoy a chat and a cuppa after each session.”
