Joy for Local Children as the Hazelbank Park Sensory Garden Reopens

Hazelbank Park Sensory Garden has officially reopened in its new location by the Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Mark Cooper.

Children from five Primary Schools in the Borough brought the garden to life during a morning of fun in the spring sunshine.

More than 30 pupils from Hill Croft, Riverside, Rosstulla, Thornfield House and Jordanstown Primary Schools had the opportunity to explore the new features of the garden. The visitors enjoyed a full sensory experience, including the calming sounds of wind chimes, brightly coloured drums, a mini-beast hotel and interactive touch panels, all designed to enhance nature-based learning activities.

Looking on as the children enjoy the new garden, the Mayor comments,

“This garden was designed to bring joy and I’m delighted that the children from our local primary schools are having such a wonderful time here today.

“It is a unique garden that seamlessly combines learning, exploration and fun.

"With its recent relocation and the addition of new features, we hope to instill a lifelong appreciation for the garden and its preservation. It’s another reason for our residents to visit Hazelbank Park, complementing the Coronation Garden beautifully.”

The sensory garden is described as a ‘playground’ for the senses, where visitors can discover different textures from touch panels, identify plant species, and understand the importance of biodiversity making the garden a valuable tool for children and adults with autism, dementia and other sensory needs.

Hazelbank Sensory Garden is the second one in the Borough, with Antrim Sensory Garden opening last year and another sensory garden is planned to open in Ballyclare later this spring. The garden is open from dawn to dusk.
