Deputy Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Noreen McClelland has recorded a special message to celebrate International Women's Day 2021.

Monday 8 March 2021 marks International Women’s Day; a global day celebrating the historical, cultural and political achievements of women.

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council will light up its three civic buildings purple this evening to mark this important date in the diary.

Deputy Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Councillor Noreen McClelland said;

“International Women’s Day is an important opportunity to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities. The theme for this year is ‘Choose to Challenge’ – and it is an action that we can all take to challenge gender inequality around the world.”

“There is no doubt that women play a critical role in society and are vital in establishing workforces that are essential to the betterment of our economy. Our Borough is blessed with many inspirational women who contribute so much to everyday life throughout our communities.”

“So as we celebrate this special day, can I encourage you all to ‘Choose to Challenge’ the inequality so that we can create an inclusive world where diversity is valued and women can thrive in a culture of respect and achievement.”
